Backup loved chicken, like ate-a-whole-package-of-frozen-solid-chicken-off-the-counter loved chicken; walks and pets and ear scratches; belly rubs and taking up the entire bed; making sure at least one part of him was touching at least one part of you whenever possible, unless he was mad or you were trying to take his picture; he loved rolling in the grass and lying down like a frog with his back legs out; he lost his mind over dried apricots and loved bananas; all leftovers including yogurt cups were on the favorites list; he knew at least 65 words and how to open and close the door; he loved doing tricks and obstacle courses; and cheese – literally ALL the cheese, he would do damn near anything if cheese was at the end of it; he loved fetch but he was TERRIBLE at it – he wouldn’t bring the ball back, you had to meet him halfway; he was a savant at reading people, he always knew who was cool and who should get lost; he tried to catch squirrels but never could except one time where he was so shocked he played with them like they were other dogs; he would wait so patiently for food and rarely stole it off your plate when you left it – unless it was chicken, then forget it; he loved swimming, shameless begging, kisses, barking and the mailman and the UPS person, taking treats from aforementioned mailman and UPS person and growling while he chewed, and visiting ALL the people and the dog party. Mostly, he loved all of us the best. After a long battle with anemia and then a recent diagnosis of cancer his little body just couldn’t take anymore and gave out today. If you knew him, or even if you just heard stories or saw our pictures, have some cheese in honor of him, roll in the grass, say hi to a squirrel, and kiss your pets and people in honor of Backup. I miss him so much already, I love him, and I am heartbroken without him. He was the BEST boy.
